Seriously, I have had enough.
I have had enough of only the best kids being put forward to experience the thrill of a match, the bustle and hype of a tournament and the camaraderie of a competition.
That stuff should be for everyone!
I am so over ONLY the physically gifted being herded into an elite team and all the others being branded as unreliable, lacking in skills or ‘not team players’.
Of course they are unreliable, they have been doubting themselves from day one because they were automatically herded into a C or D team and left to fumble around aimlessly.
Of course they are lacking in skills! You sports teachers have been ignoring them since you took one look at their abilities way back when and decided to focus on those kids who could just do it.
Of course they are ‘not team players’, when have they ever had the chance to be? They have always been made to feel lesser and useless.
Here’s the thing…sports are SUPPOSED to be fun.
For a very VERY tiny percent of our population, sports can become a profession but for the most part, it’s about being a kid, team-work, fun, exercise and learning that…here is the most important detail... WINNING ISN’T EVERYTHING IN THIS LIFE.
THAT FAILING AND LOSING IS ACTUALLY THE ONLY WAY TO EVOLVE AND GET BETTER.
THAT EXTREME JOY, SELF-ESTEEM AND FRIENDSHIP CAN BE FOUND IN RUNNING AROUND A PITCH SUPPORTING YOUR TEAM MATES AND BEING THERE TO CATCH THEM WHEN THEY FALL.
I look around and I see boys and girls berating themselves and their friends for bad passes and missed goals. I hear of vomiting with nerves and sleepless nights!
I look around and I see ADULTS who refuse to take a chance on playing the B team because THEY WANT TO WIN THEMSELVES!
Are we still in the last century?
Do we not realise that these are their formative years and that every time this happens, their self-esteem and their confidence is being knocked? These amazing little people are feeling BAD ABOUT THEMSELVES because they cannot naturally achieve a sport which, newsflash, they won’t actually need to have a great life!
These gorgeous little humans will recall these moments for years to come, with a shudder.
Why are we still doing this to them?
Sports teachers, do us all a favour and wake up. Your achievement record is unimportant to me – my child’s self esteem is.
PLAY THE FRICKING C TEAM EVERY NOW AND AGAIN AND TAKE THE HIT.
Make them feel amazing and show them how much fun these things can be when you realise winning is a bonus and not the aim.
Spend time bringing the kids who are crap up! The gifted kids already have what they need, quit trying to turn them into sporting legends for your own egotistical reasons.
I am done with my kids being taught to win because I know that my best achievements have come after trying and falling hard many times.
This is life, not a sports match.
Make them whole, well-rounded, happy and confident people and stop caring about the score.
