Life takes a sorrowful and challenging twist.
Those who you grew up relying upon, admiring and respecting suddenly become the vulnerable, the scared and the weak.
And you, you become the parent.
The responsibilities, all of them, rest on your shoulders.
You were not ready I know.
Gather strength from the memories.
Never forget how patient they must have been with you for so very long.
To teach you to talk, to walk, to dress, to eat, to interact, to communicate and most of all to cope.
They taught you everything they knew and the most important attribute they taught you, by their actions for all those years, was to care.
How to care for another human not as strong as you.
How to use the love you have to build your limited human patience.
How to listen to the same thing over and over without losing your temper.
How to gently teach and show, day in, day out.
It is a tough blow dealt by the circle of life, but a blow you have been brought up watching and learning how to deal with.
Also, look after yourself. For your parents did such a good job of that for so long – do it to honour them if for no other reason.
When you become the parent of your parent, you also become your own parent. You did not sign up for that. It is not something many of us even realise.
Do them proud as they once did you. As they have always done.
