There are plenty of things for us to busy ourselves with at this time of the year, I know. Time is tight, the load is overwhelming and none of us need another thing to add to our lists…
On saying that, there is a new festive tradition seizing social media and I think it’s one we should all consider taking onboard.
REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR
This is the brainchild of a ‘normal’ young woman who happened to pop her idea on social media and watched it go viral with a bang! It is basically the practice of putting away a food, toy or hygiene item every day in December (or for the 12 days of the advent, depending on personal choice) and donating it all to a food bank/homeless shelter a day or two before Christmas.
It’s just a lovely idea and it’s something the whole family can get involved with; the kids can choose items focused on other children who don’t have much, which is always a wonderful thing, especially at this time of the year when they have so much excess all around them.
HOW TO DO IT
1. CHOOSE A BOX OR BASKET (IF YOU ARE FEELING CRAFTY YOU CAN ASSEMBLE SOMETHING SWISHY LIKE THE ABOVE AND USE IT AGAIN EVERY YEAR).
2. ADD AN ITEM EVERY DAY. CANNED FOODS OR LONG LIFE ITEMS ARE ALWAYS GREAT BUT TREATS ARE WELCOME AT THIS TIME OF YEAR TOO (I ADD A CHRISTMAS DINNER INGREDIENT EACH DAY, IN THE HOPE THAT SOMEONE HAS THE FULL FESTIVE EXPERIENCE).
3. TAKE TO YOUR LOCAL HOMELESS SHELETER/FOOD BANK/WOMEN’S REFUGE/SAMARITANS ON CHRISTMAS EVE OR ANY DAY IN THE RUN UP TO 24TH.
4. SPEND A LITTLE TIME DISCUSSING WITH YOUR CHILDREN HOW EACH ITEM MAY HELP SOMEONE AND HOW IT WILL BRING RELIEF AND JOY.
Please pass it on ladies, wouldn’t it be fabulous if this became a regular thing all over the world? There is a wonderful lady in my village who collects everyone’s boxes each year and takes them to where they need to go, she is always doing similarly wonderful and giving things like this and if you do a little research there will be someone like her nearby, maybe it’s you?
