If you are heading out for some girl’s night fun this weekend, make sure you remind yourself and your friends of these simple, yet super-effective, safety measures.
It’s better to be a safe than sorry, and since a large number of sexual assaults happen at the end of a night out – you just can’t be too careful…
1 SAFETY IN NUMBERS
Whether you are a pair, a group of three or a group of 12 – you are only as sober as your drunkest member. Meaning, that if one of your gang is far more worse than wear than the rest of you – it’s time to call it a night and get her home safely before the rest of you get too tipsy to make good decisions. I know it’s a spoil-sport when you’re having fun, but she will thank you for it tomorrow and so will your lack of hangover! Likewise, if one of your gang insists she can get herself home safely, it’s just too much of a risk. Stay in pairs at least.
2 HOLD YOUR DRINK
Sounds simple, and it is, but also extremely effective. There are an alarming amount of reported cases of drink ‘spiking’ these days and the only way to really ensure you stay safe, is to cover your drink with your hand while you are chatting and to hold it all times. DO NOT go to the loos and come back to it unless it’s with a trusted mate – in her hand – you just never know. This is not just a young girl’s problem either, 60% of reported spikes happen above the age of 30!
Know where you are going and try to pre-book taxis to avoid the possibility of getting into an unregistered cab. Make sure there is a clear plan for each of you all to get home and if someone is last in the cab to be dropped off, make sure she texts one of you as soon as she is back safe, to give you the chance to alert help. Even better, photograph the registration on your phone as you get in so if something does go wrong, you can tell the police who will immediately trace the vehicle.
4 BE SUSPICIOUS
The most vicious serial-killers and sexual predators can also be the most charming of men. They are well practised in the art of manipulating a woman’s trust and sympathy. Not all attacks start off violent, some begin like a fairytale meeting from a romantic movie and end like a horror. Sounds dramatic yes, but it could save your life. Don’t trust anyone enough to be alone with them until you know them better and their friends/family. No matter how swept off your feet you are, stay in control.
5 GET THE TOOLS
If you want to be really safe, get yourself some tools like pepper spray or a rape alarm. Likewise there are many apps available today which can be downloaded onto your smart phone and with the touch of a button will send an emergency alert to your list of saved emergency contacts. This could be truly invaluable if you find yourself in a tight spot. They will also give out your google map location too. Genius. Try WOMEN SAFETY, available in the App Store.
Lastly, once you are all clued up and savvy – have a fabulous night!
