I am so happy that he finally feels able to after so many years, and yet at the same time I find it terribly sad that he felt the need to hide it at all…
Having been in a relationship with his manager for 40 years, Barry Manilow has finally, and officially, come out to his fans – and the world today – at the grand age of 73!
He told People Magazine that he was pleased with the reaction from his fans “When they found out that Garry and I were together, they were so happy. The reaction was so beautiful -strangers commenting ‘Great for you!” I’m just so grateful for it.”
Speaking to ETonline he also added: “I have not read one negative response… I don’t know, maybe they care about everybody, but for me, it is so moving, it is so deep that these strangers were so happy that I was happy.
Manilow, famous the world over for such classics as ‘Copacabana’ and ‘Mandy’, met Kief in 1978. They were married in a private ceremony on their Palm Springs estate in 2014.
Manilow was briefly married to Susan Deixler while he was studying at the New York College of Music – he said he was “in love” with her but was “not ready for marriage”. He revealed he’s been in a relationship with his manager Garry since the pair met in 1978, “I knew that this was it. I was one of the lucky ones. I was pretty lonely before that.”
Well Barry…and Garry… I am over the moon that you are finally able to be yourselves in all your glory. May this continue to signal the end of the dark years where any gay man feels the need to hide his true self and may it finally be the start of a more accepting world.
Finding love, whatever form it comes in, is always, ALWAYS, something to be treasured and congratulated.
